Early Years

Welcome to Early Years at Hemdean House School

Early Years Education at Hemdean House School is delivered by our dedicated Nursery and our Reception Class.

The Nursery is situated in the original lodge at the entrance to the grounds of the main school.  It has its own garden and provides a secure, stimulating and caring environment for children between the ages of 3 and 5 years.  We aim to provide an exciting, challenging and caring environment within which your child will feel secure both socially and academically.

Boys and girls from 3 to 4 years attend the Nursery between 8.45am amd 3.30pm daily; some children attend for two half-day sessions only, some attend full-time and others for something in between these extremes.  Children take part in the different daily activities and, through careful planning, observation and record-keeping, access the whole curriculum.

Three full time members of staff lead the teaching and learning activities with small groups of children.

The Nursery at Hemdean House is the first environment where we have experienced the teachers showing a passionate commitment to their roles and where the teachers have truly exceeded our expectations on a continual basis.

Nursery Parent

Boys and girls move from Nursery to the Reception Class at the beginning of the year in which they will become 5 years old.  Reception children become integrated into the full school community, participating in the wider activities of the school, and benefitting from specialist teaching in I.C.T. and French.  Each child has one-to-one time with his or her teacher for literacy and/or numeracy activities every day.  Our pupils know they are cared for and that they will do well.

Parents are particularly pleased with the standards their children achieve and the progress they make; they think that the children are well cared for, that behaviour is good and that the school promotes worthwhile attitudes.
